We apply the same criteria on our initial evaluation of applicants, however researchers holding an MD/PhD are also reviewed in detail by our research group. If MD/PhD applicants express an interest in pursuing a research oriented career and are successful in obtaining an interview, they are asked to present their work to our investigators on Wednesday before the regular Thursday interviews.

At Southwestern, we have a physician-scientist track that allows those vying for that track to be evaluated separately from the conventional clinical track. Said another way, in our program it is not the titles (MD/PhD or MD) that determine how one is evaluated, but the track for which one is a candidate for. In the end, every candidate is assessed as a whole person and any strengths certainly are positive and conversely weaknesses are negative.

Applicants receive some credit for all increased academic performance, of which a Ph.D. would be proof of an academic pursuit. Research that is productive of publications is also proof of academic performance. However, board scores, class rank, etc. are still considered important, as in any applicant. Our experience would be that a M.D./Ph.D. candidate who did not have a stellar clinical and academic performance that is comparable to their peers would not be viewed in a more favorable light. A M.D./Ph.D. who is not going to do research would not be viewed any differently than an M.D.

The process is no different, except some programs will not review applications from applicants who will enter at >pgy2.

This is very difficult. The AAD diversity program is outstanding. Well crafted by superior individuals and our specialty can hold its head high because of programs like this. So there is always value there. However, for the focus of getting a residency position, I think the other things you mention would be more productive

Dear Faculty Advisors,

My question to you is regarding the MD/PhD applicants. Are applications from these candidates evaluated same as applications from MD candidates? That is, with same criteria (board scores, class ranks etc) or these criteria become less important in an applicant with an advanced degree and with publications? Is there any difference in initial screening process with regards to applications from these two pools?

Thank you for your consideration of my questions. I look forward to your reply.

The first thing would be to be sure the current residency program director is on board with changing fields and going into Dermatology. This is especially true if one is under a contract that would be broken by taking another residency. The applicant should also be sure they will be competitive in the current match environment, or have a good backup plan in case they don't match in Dermatology.

One would go through ERAS just like the other candidates in a regular match.

The mentorship program would be of value, unless you already have strong mentors, and don't need any. The AAD has backed the mentorship program, and is interested in helping underrepresented students be successful in Dermatology. One shouldn't neglect academic pursuits, but it doesn't sound like you would be.

I think the AAD Diversity Mentorship would be quite valuable. It would provide you a personal relationship with a leader in dermatology, who will be committed to help advise you in your pursuit of a residency.

If currently in another residency, the process is the same as when in the 4th year of medical student - applying through ERAS. Unfortunately and because of funding issues, many programs cannot accept someone who will have completed three years of training by the start of dermatology residency. Nevertheless, at least 50 programs are open to physicians who will be double-boarded - and welcome it. It is important to have a letter from someone in academic dermatology, if possible, and to give a clear rationale for why you want to train in dermatology in your personal statement.

As I understand it, you register with ERAS and the NRMP and it is the same process that 4th year medical students go through.

The earlier you can gain significant exposure to dermatology, the better off you will be. In addition to allowing you to determine if you do want to continue to pursue a dermatology residency, it will give you opportunities to start to understand what it is about dermatology that appeals to you, and this is an important question to be able to answer when applying for residency.
